Rachel's print
Rachel's screen print depicts what appears to be a woman sitting at a table or desk. Her dress is long with folds, and she is turned away from the viewer, her face in shadows. Much of the image is in shadows, which makes knowing what exactly is happening in the print difficult / mysterious. There appears to be at least one typewriter on the desk. The image is stylized with what looks like brush strokes, and which makes the piece looks more like a painting or ink drawing than a print or a photo. There is a layer over the image consisting of words in type, created by a typewriter. These words read, "our writing tools are working on our thoughts" in some places more prominent than others. The typewritten words are vertical, in contrast to the the rest of the image which is horizontal. One can only wonder, is the woman in the image typing the words on the page we are viewing? Does this woman represent a specific person, or is she anonymous? Something long and pointy is attached to her head, although I am not really sure what it is, unless it happens to be a unicorn horn. From the text in the piece, I can only assume it is also a writing tool. I feel that the overall tone of this print seems to be nostalgia. The clothing, subject matter, and style of furniture all give the feeling of a time that has long passed. Most of all, the colors Rachel chose for this print specifically remind me of the illustrations in books I had when I was a child (or possibly even books my mother had as a child that were passed on to me?) That dark, golden yellowy / orange color combined with black, brown, and blue / grey. Something about the way this image is drawn / painted also reminds me of these books. Overall, I feel drawn to this piece, and I am anxious to hear Rachel speak about it.
